Legion of Black Metal Forum: Der Stürmer are back yet again with another NSBM offering and one I waited to hear for almost a year now. A friend in greece told me the album had run into pressing problems due to the extreme nature of a cover that the band wanted to originally use on the album, hence this album suffered an annoying delay. Der Stürmer are very very angry at the world and what they see as racial injustices being inflicted upon the white race, well whatever to that. Musically however this album is quite amazing. The tempo does not let up for a single second all the way through this disc and is pretty much what we have come to expect from this greek horde. The Blood Calls For W.A.R had some slower songs to break up the pace but this album doesn't at all... it's pure mayhem from start to finish. As usual with every Der Stürmer album there is the somewhat cheesy audio samples to start each song (usually highly racist) before the music comes powering in. I never felt these samples added anything positive to Der Stürmer's music but it seems they are pretty much insistent on trying to hammer home their messages of hate and racial inequality. Der Stürmer once famously said that with them it's politics first and music secondary or something very close to that. Be that as it may they always seem to release good albums and A Banner Greater Than Death is no exception to that rule. All in all a very strong release from Der Stürmer and fans of their previous albums should definatley get this. If NS themes in music offends then you should most definatley avoid this album because in reality it has no other purpose than propoganda. Lilith
Hateful Underground Zine: The PC brigade please move on to the next review... Der Stürmer have returned. The 3-way split EP with Arghoslent and Mudoven showed the promise now delivered on their second full-length A Banner Greater Than Death - never has their attack been so deadly and focused. The majority of the songs is fired away in a full-on Blitzkrieg attack approach radiating with cruel and barbaric riffs, drums blasting like cannonfire, with Der Stürmer war machine rolling ever mercilessly onwards. The clumsy drumwork of old is only a memory, as the session hammer TS whips the skins like a berserker; not too tight, but twice the intensity. Commando Wolf stands at the helm, shouting his grunts of propaganda with a heavy Greek accent, reminiscent of Sakis Necromayhem on some of those early Rotting Christ live tracks - only with increased hate. This definitely is War Metal, brutal and relentless. Amidst all the brutality of this harsh storm of steel, Der Stürmer also know how to slow down into heavier passages, delivering a triumphant battle hymn in the form of Those Who Lived and Died Like Heroes. Also in between many appropriate intro samples are to be found, from the obvious (Hitler speeches) to the more suprising (movies such as The Gladiator, Fight Club and The Punisher). Most of all this is just pure onslaught, but never coming across stagnant or numbing. All in all one of the strongest assaults this year, and Der Stürmer's definite crowning moment.
